Duolingo

DuoLingo- a free language learning application. Depending on the language the course quality can vary. The Russian course gave me a decent foundation on which to continue learning. Use the browser version to access grammar explanations.

Context-Reverso

A translator that translates words in context. Example sentences are sourced from movies, legal documents, literature. Big-Data gift. There is a 'Learn' feature as well that allows you to review the words in your search history and test yourself on them.

Grammar Reference

An excellent and, more importantly, free online grammar resource. Good for beginners because of its concise explanations (with examples for each subtopic), and because its structure facilitates easy reference. However it can be overwhelming, especially for those encountering a case-system language for the first time.

Russian Verbs Conjugation

Necessary application. Enter a verb in it's infinitive form and you will receive a table of it's conjugations in the present and past as well as it's aspect.

Semester Rus- Learn and Test Russian

This is basically a TORFL preparation application. Walks you through every case and grammar rule. No 'locked exercises', no ads. On this application you are not obligated to spell apple 50 times before learning another word, and you are not required to do any exercises if you don't want to or don't think it is necessary. Lessons are organised into 'Elementary level' (A1), 'Basic level' (A2) and '1st Certificate level' (B1), and there are full timed tests at the end of each block of exercises, allowing you to gauge roughly where you are according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Suitable for beginners and intermediates, the only prerequisite is knowledge of the cyrillic alphabet.

Bilingual books

This website has a large variety of books in dual language, paragraph by paragraph, that can be downloaded on to your electronic device. It will save you from having to use a dictionary constantly to look up the meaning of words, and is, in my experience, a good method to increase vocabulary and familiarise oneself with different sentence structures. I used this to read Master and Margarita.

Series and anime dubbed in Russian

I used this site to watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Verbs of Motion

Learning the Verbs of Motion is one of the most difficult parts of the Russian language. This application will help you understand their prefixes and will test you on their usage in context.
